Introduction to Liu Zongli
Born in 1915, Yanagi was the son of the renowned folk artist Ryu Sogetsu, who laid the theoretical and aesthetic foundations of "Japanese Folk Art", and was nurtured by the beauty of traditional Japanese folk crafts from a young age. 1950, Yanagi established the Yanagi Design Agency, and over the decades, his designs of furniture and household tools have won numerous international awards, including the first prize at the Japan Industrial Design Competition, the Gold Medal at the Milan Awards in Italy, the good design award, the highest honour in the Japanese industrial design world; and since 1977, he has been the director of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum.
